Van Hai was born in 1968 in Hoa Binh. He spent his youth in a world of lacquers and paintings with his uncle, the artist Tran Van Can who was one of the pioneers of lacquer work in Vietnam. Van Hai worked with him for a long time as an apprentice at his lacquer workshops, where he has been exposed to all the secrets and techniques of his uncle.. To this practical knowledge, he added an academic background. In 1992, he graduated from the" Institut de Musique et de Peinture" in Hanoi. Van Hai is now a renowned artist with a tremendous variety of themes (still life,landscapes,people) and techniques (lacquer and oil). His works figure in official collections in Vietnam and in numerous private collections in the United States, Japan, United Kingdom and France.
